Top tips for your Alta Via 1 Dolomites itinerary

When creating your Alta Via 1 Dolomites itinerary from scratch using our app there are so many options and decisions you can make - route, accommodation, transport and more. Here are our top tips to creating the ultimate itinerary using our planning app for the Alta Via 1 Dolomites.

 

Tip #1: Add bus from Cortina to Lago di Braies Trailhead

If you are travelling from Cortina to get to Lago di Braies, here’s how to add it to your itinerary:

  • Select Cortina accommodation or start flag as your “Start Location”

  • Select your Night 1 accommodation

  • Drag your route line to the bus transport route north of Cortina

Don’t forget to pre-book your bus ticket between Dobbiaco <> Lago di Braies.

 

TIP #2: Add Croda del Becco side trip

This out-and-back route provides spectacular views of Lago di Braies and the surrounding peaks of the Dolomites. To add this to your itinerary:

  • Drag your route line to the end of the route.

TIP #3: ADD WW1 LAGAZUOI TUNNELS

A unique opportunity to walk through the WWI tunnel system that weaves down within the mountain. To add this to your itinerary:

  • Drag your route onto the small section of alternative trail named “WW1 tunnels within Monte Lagazuoi”

  • If you would like to continue on the direct alternative route via Forcella Averau, no further updates needed.

  • If you would like to continue on the main route via Forcella Col dei Bos, drag your route onto this trail.

TIP #4: STAYING AT campground IN CORTINA

Choosing to stay at Camping Rocchetta in Cortina is a great option those wanting to camp. A few route options:

  1. Exit/return to the main trail via Tofana ski area to Cortina and then catch the local bus.

  2. Take the bus between Cianzope and Cortina, and then local bus to/from campground.

  3. Combination of the above

TIP #5: Add MONTE PELMO ALTERNATIVE ROUTE

This challenging alternative route is not for the faint hearted. There are steep, exposed sections on very friable rocks with some cables to assist. To add this alternative route to your itinerary:

  • To do a full circuit of Monte Pelmo and return to Passo Staulanza, use 2 markers to move your route.

  • If you would like to continue on to Coldai via Palafavera, use another marker to select this direct route, rather than heading back to the main trail.

Note: Make sure your markers are reflecting the right hiking day. In this example, markers are 4.1, 4.2, 4.3 reflecting Day 4 of hiking.

TIP #6: ADD RA GUSELA VIA FERRATA

This beginners via ferrata trail does not present significant technical difficulties. However, every hiker must assess their level of risk and gear choice. To add this route to your itinerary:

  • Drag your route or marker onto this section of the trail

TIP #7: CHOOSING YOUR EXIT LOCATION

There are many “exit” locations for the AV1. The most popular is La Pissa. However for those that wish to reduce their hiking days, there are a few options:

  1. Exiting on the East - It is possible to exit at Passo Staulanza, Palafavera, Forno di Zoldo, Soffranco and Longarone. There is a local bus (line 25) that connects Passo Staulanza and Longarone.

  2. Exiting on the West - It is possible to exit at Alleghe, Listolade and La Pissa. There is a local bus that connects Alleghe and Belluno.

Simply click on the “Flag” icon and select “Finish location” to incorporate any of these exit locations into your itinerary.
