Wanderers

These itineraries are great for hikers that want to regularly stop, smell the wild flowers and take pictures of each and every stunning landscape they come across. Because of this, the estimated hiking times have been increased by 10%, compared to the Steady hiker, to account for a more relaxed pace. With the biggest day of elevation change registering at between 2,800 - 3,000 metres (9,300 - 9,900 feet), Wanderers will still have the fitness to turn in a solid days work on the trail when required…unless they decide to take one for the team by catching a gondola down to the village and making sure there are enough refreshments on ice for the arrival of their fellow Haute Route hikers!

We’ve created 3 itineraries for the Wanderer:

  • 14 Day (All Highlights): This itinerary allows hikers to experience all highlights along the Haute Route trail, including Moiry Glacier, Skywalk suspension bridge and the Europaweg balcony trail into Zermatt.

  • 14 Day (A Little Luxury): This itinerary is targeted to hikers that would like to stay every night in a private room - this means no sharing, no loud snorers in your dorm keeping you up or smelly socks to contend with! Unfortunately it skips Moiry Glacier as there are no private rooms at Cabane de Moiry.

  • 15 Day (Weisshorn + Grande-Dixence): This itinerary includes a night at Hotel Weisshorn, an opportunity to marvel at a Swiss engineering feat, Grande-Dixence - the world’s largest gravity fed dam in the world - and all the natural highlights that the Alps offers on the Haute Route trail.

**Note: Due to the closure of a section on the Europaweg Trail, a detour has been incorporated into all impacted itineraries.

Wandering Hiker Itineraries

ITINERARY 1: 14 DAY (ALL HIGHLIGHTS)

This itinerary includes all the natural highlights that the Alps offers on the Haute Route trail. It takes a classic route which features nights at the two highest mountain huts on the trail; Cabane de Moiry, which is located beside it’s namesakes glacier at an altitude of 2,825m (9,268 ft); lunch at Cabane Des Dix at 2,928m (9,600 ft), which is also a stop on the winter ski-touring Haute Route perched above the Chelion Glacier. Although most finish locations offer accommodation with private rooms, it does have some required dorm stays which ensures no natural highlights of the trail are skipped. This itinerary is for the Wanderer that wants to immerse themselves in the Natural beauty of the Haute Route Trail above all else.
