Speedy Hikers

Our Speedy itineraries are for fit, experienced hikers who are always catching and passing others on the trail. They are for hikers with a strong endurance base that can keep the pace up throughout the day and can handle daily average of 20 km / 12 miles on the trail. With the biggest daily elevation change of 3,909 metres / 12,845 feet, hikers that choose these itineraries aren’t just speedy but mountain goats too!

We’ve created 5 itineraries for the Speedy Hiker:

  • 10 Day (Includes Europaweg): If you are trying to shorten your journey, this 10 day itinerary allows you to cross the Skywalk suspension bridge and complete the entire Europaweg balcony trail, but it skips the Moiry Glacier.

  • 10 Day (Includes Moiry Glacier): If you are trying to shorten your journey, this 10 day itinerary allows you to spend a night at the Moiry Glacier, but skips the Europaweg balcony trail.

  • 10 Day (Includes Moiry Glacier & Skywalk): If you are trying to shorten your journey, this 10 day itinerary allows you to spend a night at Moiry Glacier, cross Skywalk suspension bridge, but skip the final Europaweg section into Zermatt.

  • 11 Day (All Highlights): This itinerary allows hikers to experience all highlights along the Haute Route trail, including Moiry Glacier, Skywalk suspension bridge and the entire Europaweg balcony trail into Zermatt.

  • 11 Day (A Little Luxury): This itinerary is targeted to hikers that would like to stay every night in a private room - this means no sharing, no loud snorers in your dorm keeping you up or smelly socks to contend with! Unfortunately it skips Moiry Glacier as there are no private rooms at Cabane de Moiry.

**Note: Due to the closure of a section on the Europaweg Trail, a detour has been incorporated into all impacted itineraries.

Speedy Hiker Itineraries

ITINERARY 1: 10 DAY (INCLUDES EUROPAWEG)

This itinerary is for a Speedy hiker with only 10 days available that wants to cross the Skywalk suspension bridge and complete the entire Europaweg balcony trail, in favour of staying a night at the Moiry Glacier. Finishing the Haute Route from the Europaweg trail is the preferred approach given the Matterhorn dominates your landscape view for the final hours of hiking and reflection, rather than suddenly appearing in the final moments if you take the valley trail. This route include crossing the Chelion Glacier, so hikers will still get an opportunity for a unique experience with one of these ancient natural wonders as a consolation to missing a night at Moiry Glaicer.

  • Average hiking distance per day: 21 kilometres / 13 miles

Accommodation Options Available at Finish Locations

  • 9/10 nights - Dorm room (1 night required in private room with shared bathroom)

  • 7/10 nights - Private room with shared bathroom (1 night can be in private room & bathroom or dorm, 2 nights in mountain hut dorm)

  • 8/10 nights - Private room & bathroom (2 nights in mountain hut dorm)

These accommodation options are listed in the booking portal for you to choose from and book directly with the provider. I help you secure the bookings with the Alpine Huts but you still pay the market rate on arrival. See blog post on how to estimate cost of your Haute Route trip here

Key Trail Highlights on Route

  • Sentier Trail: Amazing balcony trail above the Bagnes Valley with views of the Grand Combin Massif where the original Haute Route ski tour crosses

  • Crossing Chelion Glacier: Experience a self-guided glacier crossing after stopping in at Cabane Des Dix to plot your path and enjoy some food on their patio

  • Europaweg Trail: A high alpine balcony trail running up the Mattertal Valley to the Haute Route finish line, which includes the world's longest suspension bridge.

**Note: Due to the closure of a section on the Europaweg Trail, a detour has been incorporated into this itinerary

ITINERARY 2: 10 DAY (INCLUDES MOIRY GLACIER)

This itinerary is for a Speedy hiker with only 10 days available that wants to spend a night at the Moiry Glacier rather than finishing the Haute Route from the Europaweg balcony trail. The cabane is relatively new and located immediately beside the glacier. It has a huge glass facade in the dining room which allows you to witness the changing light on the glacier as the sun sets during dinner and therefore it is no surprise that a night here is often regarded as a Haute Route hikers favourite for their entire journey. This route includes the Sentier balcony trail with landscape views of the Grand Combin Massif as a consolation to missing Europaweg. Rising early in Zermatt to see the Alpine Glow of the Matterhorn will go a long way to making up for your decision to choose Moiry Glacier instead :)

ITINERARY 3: 10 DAY (INCLUDES MOIRY GLACIER + Skywalk)

This itinerary is for Speedy hikers that want to maximise their 10 days by including a night at Moiry Glacier but also cross Skywalk, world's longest suspension bridge located on the Europaweg trail.

To achieve this in 10 days, the route is the same as 10 day (Moiry Glacier) up until the Mattertal Valley where it follows the valley until Randa, where you will hike up to Europaweg Trail to cross the Skywalk. You will then descend back to the valley and continue onto Zermatt. This is the longest day in the itinerary which can be shortened by catching a train within the Mattertal Valley (but surely you’ll find something special to hike across the finish line though!).

Alternatively, the 11-day itinerary below has been designed for specifically for a Speedy hiker to spend a night at Moiry Glacier and complete the Europaweg Trail over a more manageable two days.

Key Route and Hiking Stats:

  • Total Distance: 196 kilometres / 122 miles

  • Average hiking distance per day: 20 kilometres / 12 miles

  • Average hiking time per day: 6.5 hours

  • Average elevation change per day: 2,514 metres / 8,248 feet

  • Longest hiking day: 26 kilometres / 16 miles

  • Skywalk on the Europaweg Trail: Follow the Mattertal Valley under Randa, where you will hike up to the Europaweg Trail to cross the Skywalk, world's longest suspension bridge. You’ll descend to the valley afterwards to reach Zermatt on the same day

**Note: Due to the closure of a section on the Europaweg Trail, a detour has been incorporated into this itinerary

ITINERARY 4: 11 DAY (all highlights)

This itinerary has been designed for a Speedy hiker that has 11 days to complete the Haute Route. The route and timeframe have been chosen to remove the need for hikers to make any compromises which is required with the above 3 itineraries. A night at Cabane de Moiry is planned, as is enough time to complete the entire Europaweg trail. This is the recommended itinerary for Speedy hikers that have the time and a primary focus on seeing all the Haute Route highlights rather than making sure they have a private room each night.

ITINERARY 5: 11 DAY (A LITTLE LUXURY)

This itinerary is targeted to hikers that would like to stay every night in a private room - this means no sharing, no loud snorers in your dorm keeping you up or smelly socks to contend with! (Unless your partner is the problem hiker…) This route covers most of the key highlights along the Haute Route, only missing Moiry Glacier, which doesn’t offer private rooms in their Cabane. This is a great itinerary for “light-packers” (as you don’t need to carry any additional sleeping gear) or those that are willing to spend a little extra money to enjoy more of a luxurious adventure. No judgement here!

  • Lunch at Hotel Weisshorn: An institution of the Swiss Alps, Hotel Weisshorn has been in service for over 130 years. It is perched in isolation with views of the Rhone Valley and the Bernese Alps
