With the continued warm weather, thankfully only a few small patches of snow are left to cross. The update for August is focused on trail deterioration, closures and changes as well as some general information and tips to help those still planning to complete the Haute Route during 2019.

By choosing to hike the Haute Route in early June, you are at the mercy of mother nature. Some years you’ll come across minimal snow, however, in others you’d be better on skis. Choosing to start the Walker’s Haute Route trail in late June is usually a safe bet though as enough snow has melted to make all the sections passable. Unfortunately, 2019 is the year you’d lose that bet!

The following trail updates comes from my first journey along the Haute Route this year, notifications from hut guardians in the last few days and other early season hikers/guides that have asked for and/or passed on updates to help other following after them.

Europaweg Trail Closure in Summer 2019: How to adjust your Walker's Haute Route plan

The Europaweg Trail between Grächen and Zermatt is one of the key highlights on the Walker’s Haute Route. Unfortunately a key section of the trail destroyed by a large rockfall last year requires a new, safer route to be established. According to the local authorities responsible for work, the new route is not expected to be be open during the 2019 hiking season. Due to so many hikers being impacted by this closure, I’ve prepared the following analysis and options to help everyone choose an alternative route.
